SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) lets you connect directly to your site’s file system to upload, download, and manage files. This is useful for uploading themes or plugins manually, editing configuration files, or managing media outside of WordPress.
Finding Your SFTP Credentials
- Navigate to your site’s dashboard and click the Connections tab
- Find the SFTP card
- Your credentials are displayed with copy buttons next to each field:
- Host — The server address to connect to
- Port — The SFTP port number
- Username — Your SFTP username
- Password — Your SFTP password (hidden by default, click to reveal)
Connecting with an SFTP Client
Use any SFTP client to connect with the credentials from your dashboard. Here’s how to connect with FileZilla (free, cross-platform):
- Download and install FileZilla (or your preferred SFTP client)
- Open the application and locate the quick-connect bar at the top
- Enter your Host from the MightyPress dashboard
- Enter your Username and Password
- Enter the Port number
- Click Quickconnect
- Once connected, you’ll see your site’s files in the remote panel on the right
Tip: Make sure to select SFTP (not FTP) as the protocol. Standard FTP is not supported for security reasons.
Resetting Your SFTP Password
If you’ve forgotten your SFTP password or need to change it for security reasons:
- Go to the Connections tab in your site dashboard
- In the SFTP card, click the Reset SFTP Password button
- A new password will be generated immediately
- Update the password in your SFTP client to continue connecting
Recommended SFTP Clients
- FileZilla — Free, cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Cyberduck — Free, available for Windows and Mac
- Transmit — Paid, Mac only, polished interface
