How do I add a custom domain to my site?

Connecting a custom domain to your MightyPress site lets visitors reach your site at your own branded URL instead of the default .pressable.site address. This guide walks you through adding a domain, configuring DNS, and verifying SSL.

Prerequisites

  • A registered domain name from any domain registrar (e.g., Namecheap, GoDaddy, Cloudflare)
  • Access to your domain’s DNS settings at your registrar
  • An Active site on MightyPress

Adding Your Domain

  1. Navigate to your site’s dashboard and click the Domains tab
  2. In the Add Custom Domain form, enter your domain name (e.g., example.com)
  3. Click the Add button
  4. Your domain will appear in the domains list with a pending DNS status

Configuring DNS Records

After adding your domain, you need to point it to your MightyPress server by updating DNS records at your registrar.

Required DNS Records

The Domains tab displays a DNS help section with the exact records you need. Use the copy buttons next to each value for easy copying:

  • A Record — Points your root domain (e.g., example.com) to the server IP address
  • CNAME Record — Points the www subdomain to your MightyPress site URL

How to Update DNS at Your Registrar

  1. Log in to your domain registrar’s control panel
  2. Find the DNS Management or DNS Settings section for your domain
  3. Add or update the A record for @ (root) with the IP address shown in your MightyPress dashboard
  4. Add or update the CNAME record for www with the value shown in your MightyPress dashboard
  5. Save your changes

Tip: DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide, though most updates take effect within a few hours.

SSL Certificate

Once your DNS records are properly configured and propagated, MightyPress automatically provisions a free SSL certificate for your domain. You can monitor the SSL status in the Domains tab:

  • Pending — SSL is waiting for DNS verification
  • Active — SSL is provisioned and your site is secured with HTTPS

No manual action is required — SSL is fully automated.

Troubleshooting

  • Domain not resolving: Double-check your DNS records and allow up to 48 hours for propagation
  • SSL not activating: Ensure your A record and CNAME are correct — SSL provisioning requires valid DNS
  • “Domain already in use” error: The domain may be attached to another site. Remove it from the other site first
